Year of the Pig charity event brings London and China closer together

A fundraising event held by the newly-formed UK-China Charity Initiative has raised over £37,000 for two essential causes.

The funds will be split between a remote rural school in China and vulnerable children in London.

Held in the City of London to celebrate the Year of the Pig, the event saw nearly 300 guests taking part in auctions and raffles. The guests were drawn from Chinese and British political and commercial circles.

The UK-China Charity Initiative was jointly created at the end of 2018 by the China Chamber of Commerce in the UK (CCCUK) and the City of London.

The Chinese ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming, spoke at the event. He praised the initiative, saying, “Charity work helps shorten the distance between two hearts by building a bridge of love.”

He went on to say that “Chinese and British companies now have a new platform, where they can join hands in fulfilling their corporate responsibilities and provide public services. This is also a new channel for the two sides to deepen mutually-beneficial cooperation.”

The event was sponsored by China Telecom Europe, whose managing director Charlie Cao is also vice-chairman of CCCUK. He said “this event shows that good businesses can also do good for society.” He looked forward to future events, saying that the partnership between CCCUK and the City of London would “continue to generate more ideas and jointly give back to the cause of public welfare.”
